Samsung Galaxy S Getting FroYo Soon

Posted: July 30th, 2010 | Author: Daniel Georges | Filed under: Technology | Tags: , , , , , , , , | No Comments »

So, you went out and brought Samsung’s delicious Galaxy S on the day of release. You are sitting their contemplating your purchase, but feel slightly disenchanted. You have such a fast beautiful device, but all the cool kids with their HTC’s and Motorola’s are getting all this news of Android 2.2 while you are left without hope.
Today that changes my AMOLED loving friend, with Samsung saying September is the month that you get to really see if the humming in hummingbird is accurate. No exact day, but at least you will know that by October you will be all Flashed out and waiting eagerly for Gingerbread.

Android Slapped On Touch Diamond2

Posted: July 7th, 2010 | Author: Daniel Georges | Filed under: Technology | Tags: , , , , , , | No Comments »

It won’t be long till Android can be installed on everything, but until then the HTC Touch Diamond2 is the latest device to get modded. The modders managed to put the popular Android 2.1 on the hardware without many issues. You can make calls and browse the web, though the performance hasn’t been optimized for the 528mhz Quadcomm processor.
It is definitely great that modders have managed to not just run a new OS on an old piece of hardware, but to actually make it function correctly is amazing. While the mod is amazing, I won’t be impressed until my Nokia 5110 from the 90′s runs Android.

Vaio Mass Recall Exaggeration

Posted: July 1st, 2010 | Author: Daniel Georges | Filed under: Technology | Tags: , , , , , , , , | No Comments »

Sony has been hit with an unfortunate recall notice following the release of a BIOS upgrade that fixed a potential overheating issue. The issue was that first generation F series and second generation CW series Vaio’s would overheat because the heating management system wouldn’t kick in. Sony is confident that the new Vaio BIOS fixes the issue and is available here.
Unfortunately the mainstream press got a wind that the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission had issued a recall notice. It seems that they didn’t see the video of the new Macbook Pro boiling water.
Vaio owners, you guys own the best laptops on the market by a large margin. I say this after owning every major brand and having to support all brands for over 7 years. Issues like this happen constantly to all brands, the difference is the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is usually ignorant to the issues.

3D Games Come Early In Japan

Posted: June 1st, 2010 | Author: Daniel Georges | Filed under: Gaming | Tags: , , , , , , , | No Comments »

Sony released a patch for the PS3 last month that removed OtherOS but added the ability to have 3D games. Unfortunately at the time there were no 3D games so everyone focused on the negative (the loss of OtherOS). This is about to change in Japan with 3D games coming this month.
Bravia promotion. Super Stardust HD, Pain, and WipeOut HD will all receive a 3D patch on the 10th of June, and as a bonus they will cost you money! So not only did you just fork out way to much for a 3D TV, but you got to now pay a little bit extra for those 3D games that you already brought!

Froyo Delious On Evo 4G

Posted: May 31st, 2010 | Author: Daniel Georges | Filed under: Technology | Tags: , , , , , , | No Comments »

The latest Android device to get the Froyo upgrade seems to be the one that would enjoy it the most. The device in question is the HTC Evo 4G, the monster handset that eats other smartphones for desert (it prefers feature phones for the other meals, because they are leaner).
Richard Ross from over at the XDA forums showed a video of it running, and the guys over at The Gadgets are working on a how to so that you too can run the Flash ready OS on your Evo.

Sony Dash Gets Chubby’er

Posted: May 27th, 2010 | Author: Daniel Georges | Filed under: Technology | Tags: , , , , | No Comments »

The worlds most intense alarm clock just got slightly more intense. Now the Sony Dash is getting limited USB functions. The Dash will be able to listen to music and photos off the USB port in the next firmware upgrade. No more having to stream all your music and pictures wirelessly to see them on your power tethered tablet wanna-be.
Expect these features in the June update. An alarm clock that requires a firmware update. What is the world coming to?!

Sony Ericsson X10 Is Multitouch After All

Posted: April 17th, 2010 | Author: Daniel Georges | Filed under: Technology | Tags: , , , , , , , | No Comments »

There has been a lot of controversy regarding the Sony Ericsson X10 and the lack of multitouch. It started in a document which didn’t explicitly mention it had multitouch and then in a final device which didn’t have it. That may soon change as well as other things.
The X10 is a beautiful device (other then the slightly plastic feel), but it came out with software which was almost prehistoric (Android 1.5). Now it seems Android 2.1 may soon be dropping down for a visit, bring his close friend multitouch with him (or her). The bad news, his (or her) flight has been delayed (maybe due to volcanic ash) and won’t be touching down till September.
SE, it is time to pull your damn finger out and put some weight behind your first portray into the Android world. When Motorola is doing better then you are, at making beautiful smartphones, it’s a big worry.

Zune Gets Real Homebrew Finally

Posted: April 17th, 2010 | Author: Daniel Georges | Filed under: Technology | Tags: , , , , , , , | No Comments »

The Zune HD is a beautiful device by all accounts. It is slightly smaller then a iPod Toucb, but with considerably better insides (the screen isn’t bad either). The problem has been is Microsoft owns it, and have decided to only allow there own app’s which are few and far between. That has changed today with the release of the new OpenZDK toolkit.
What it means is you can now develop apps on top of the Zune firmware, with no limitations from the XNA platform. While it is brand new and has zero apps available, it could allow development of emulators and other useful tools that you would never have seen on your Zune in the past.
The kit is available now, and there is a forum where submissions will be available (when there are some). I recommend jumping over to Zune Boards for more info. Word of warning, development is very young, so expect a lot of rebooting of Zune.

Sony 0 Hackers 1 With PS3 OtherOS

Posted: April 8th, 2010 | Author: Daniel Georges | Filed under: Technology | Tags: , , , , , , | No Comments »

After Sony attempted to block the whole Linux on PS3 with their latest update, a pioneering hacker has come along and broken it open. Basically, he has achieved the new firmware version AND have the option to boot Linux.
Dubbed “3.21OO”, it can’t quite be downloaded yet, but it is good to hear that PS3 modders might finally be getting somewhere with the device. Lets hope cool things other then piracy come as a result.

Zune 4.5 Firmware A Go

Posted: April 6th, 2010 | Author: Daniel Georges | Filed under: Technology | Tags: , , , | No Comments »

It seems Microsoft felt the pressure of the upcoming update to the iPhone/iTouch/iPad 4.0 firmware, and have pushed the Zune 4.5 update forward. While there is nothing ground-breaking, they have added some nice features such as better codec support and Smart DJ mix (like Genius in iTunes).
Also, the rumour regarding the 64GB Zune HD is no longer rumour and now fact (priced at a reasonable $US349). This should help make the wait for Windows Mobile 7 all that more bearable.
