FaceTime Eats Data Allowance

Posted: August 3rd, 2010 | Author: Daniel Georges | Filed under: Technology | Tags: , , , , , | No Comments »

Someone has done the unspeakable and used a jailbroken iPhone 4 to use FaceTime over 3G (instead of WiFi). If you were wondering why Apple haven’t allowed it as yet, you can stop. They found it used around 3MB’s a minute, or in other words would use you entire 200mb allowance in around an hour. As you could imagine, it could become an expensive novelty quickly.

Motorola Obviously Doesn’t Understand Open Source

Posted: July 16th, 2010 | Author: Daniel Georges | Filed under: Technology | Tags: , , , , , , , , | No Comments »

Motorola has recently released the Droid X. The 4.3-inch behemoth has made a lot of reviewers wet and excited. The problem is, Motorola has a dirty little secret and it isn’t a good one.
Motorola have added a self destruct function that is activated when anyone attempts to tamper with the OS. When tampering is detected the phone instantly bricks itself, becoming unusable and a relatively expensive paper weight.
Motorola is basically taking a device, which hacker emthusiasts would have loved to ‘tamper’ with, and made it the least hacker friendly device released this year. What does Motorola gain by locking the phone down? Maybe stopping hackers from porting Motorola’s dead ugly MOTOBLUR UI additions to other hardware?
Did they forget that the OS they are using is Open Source? The same hackers that you are locking out, are also the same ones making Android better! It is a damn shame, as the Droid X is one impressive piece of hardware.

Android Slapped On Touch Diamond2

Posted: July 7th, 2010 | Author: Daniel Georges | Filed under: Technology | Tags: , , , , , , | No Comments »

It won’t be long till Android can be installed on everything, but until then the HTC Touch Diamond2 is the latest device to get modded. The modders managed to put the popular Android 2.1 on the hardware without many issues. You can make calls and browse the web, though the performance hasn’t been optimized for the 528mhz Quadcomm processor.
It is definitely great that modders have managed to not just run a new OS on an old piece of hardware, but to actually make it function correctly is amazing. While the mod is amazing, I won’t be impressed until my Nokia 5110 from the 90′s runs Android.

Android Fly’s On Nokia N900

Posted: June 27th, 2010 | Author: Daniel Georges | Filed under: Technology | Tags: , , , , , , , | 3 Comments »

Seems a homeless man (look at the background in the video) has found a way of getting Android 2.2 (FroYo) to act appropriately on Nokia’s N900. Magically N900 doesn’t just run Android, it runs it really well. While there are a few omission’s, like no card reader support, it can’t be long before the most hack-able mobile phone on the market gets arguable the most hack-able operating system. My hat is off to you, you filthy pig.

Geohot Hacks PS3…Theoretically

Posted: June 25th, 2010 | Author: Daniel Georges | Filed under: Technology | Tags: , , , , , | No Comments »

Geohot, the man who has shown that he has matter of fact broken the PS3 security, has explained how it can be done at the last Nuit Du Hack. Unfortunately, he also said that he won’t be releasing custom firmware to the public anytime soon. The good news is, he has outlined how anyone out there with some brains can do it. Will we finally see PS3 firmware? Probably not for a while yet.

For videos of the genius himself, explaining his theory, jump over to PS3-Hacks.

Zune Gets Real Homebrew Finally

Posted: April 17th, 2010 | Author: Daniel Georges | Filed under: Technology | Tags: , , , , , , , | No Comments »

The Zune HD is a beautiful device by all accounts. It is slightly smaller then a iPod Toucb, but with considerably better insides (the screen isn’t bad either). The problem has been is Microsoft owns it, and have decided to only allow there own app’s which are few and far between. That has changed today with the release of the new OpenZDK toolkit.
What it means is you can now develop apps on top of the Zune firmware, with no limitations from the XNA platform. While it is brand new and has zero apps available, it could allow development of emulators and other useful tools that you would never have seen on your Zune in the past.
The kit is available now, and there is a forum where submissions will be available (when there are some). I recommend jumping over to Zune Boards for more info. Word of warning, development is very young, so expect a lot of rebooting of Zune.

Sony 0 Hackers 1 With PS3 OtherOS

Posted: April 8th, 2010 | Author: Daniel Georges | Filed under: Technology | Tags: , , , , , , | No Comments »

After Sony attempted to block the whole Linux on PS3 with their latest update, a pioneering hacker has come along and broken it open. Basically, he has achieved the new firmware version AND have the option to boot Linux.
Dubbed “3.21OO”, it can’t quite be downloaded yet, but it is good to hear that PS3 modders might finally be getting somewhere with the device. Lets hope cool things other then piracy come as a result.

Exploit Your Wii, Chipless

Been waiting off on buying a Wii until hackers could exploit it enough to not use a modchip? Your time has now arrived, with some genius’s working out how to crash Zelda and then hack into the system to run exploit code. What’s next? Maybe Linux Wii Edition?

iPhone/Touch Firmware 1.1.3 Jailbroken

Posted: January 20th, 2008 | Author: Daniel Georges | Filed under: sideblog | Tags: , , , , , , | No Comments »

It didn’t take to long to break open Apple’s 1.1.3 firmware, but seems that hackers already have. Jailbreak is now doable on your 1.1.3 iPod Touch or iPhone, with one problem. They haven’t released the info on how to do it. Apparently it is too complicated and they are working on making it easier for the average user. Expect it pretty soon, considering what the Jailbreak team have already accomplished.

Your WPA Network Is Safe. Not.

Posted: January 15th, 2008 | Author: Daniel Georges | Filed under: sideblog | Tags: , , , , , | No Comments »

There are different versions of WPA, but apparently one of them is hackable and there is a video to prove it. Seems to need some Linux skills to do it, and it looks bloody complex, but is definitely do-able. The video is here, and remember with great power comes great responsibility.
