Windows Mobile 7 Is All Bing

Posted: July 23rd, 2010 | Author: Daniel Georges | Filed under: Technology | Tags: , , , , , , | No Comments »

Microsoft may have made a largish mistake by making Bing the sole provider of search on the nextgen Windows Mobile platform. Apparently Greg Sullivan, senior product manager for Microsoft, has said “the search engine has been heavily integrated into the OS, so it would be hard to offer an alternative.” What this means is not only is Bing the default choice for search, it is also the only choice for search.
As long as Bing is up to the task, and from my experience it isn’t, then their shouldn’t be a problem. If you aren’t happy with Bing, give it a few months and every other search engine will sue them into submission.

Zune Pass Comming To Eager Poms

Posted: July 19th, 2010 | Author: Daniel Georges | Filed under: Technology | Tags: , , , , , , | No Comments »

While Netflix makes the move to Canada, another all you can eat service is busting out of its red, white and blue prison. This time it is the highly desirable Zune Pass service.
Zune pass gives you unlimited music, but with the bonus of getting to keep a hand full of songs every month. With Windows Mobile 7  arriving soon and it having a familiar Zune like interface it makes sense to have the same services.
Its first stop will be the UK. I wouldn’t be surprised if the scope was to widen considerably, especially with that September release date rushing up fast.

HTC HD3 Leak To Good To Be True

Posted: July 2nd, 2010 | Author: Daniel Georges | Filed under: Technology | Tags: , , , , , , , , | 1 Comment »

The leaked spec’s for the rumoured HTC HD3 are so good that they are impossible for me to believe. Start with an almost borderless 4.5-inch AMOLED screen (800×1280), 1.5Ghz Snapdragon, 1 GB of memory, HDMI, 8mp dual flash camera, 3G/4G support and the ability to cure cancer/erectile dysfunction.
With spec’s like those it would be a massive leap over the current wish-wash of superphones. It looks like I will definitely be looking forward to the Windows Mobile 7 release after all.

Windows Mobile 7 Is Beautiful

Posted: February 16th, 2010 | Author: Daniel Georges | Filed under: Technology | Tags: , | No Comments »

What a pleasant surprise (sort of surprise) Microsoft has spread out with the newest Windows Mobile. So different to the past alliterations. If it wasn’t for the Windows logo, you wouldn’t have guessed (especially when compared to the previous ‘leaked’ images).
It is simple and clean, it reeks of smart design and it rids itself of legacy. These are the things all version of Windows should excrete, but never do. I would go as far as saying, this may actually do the basics better then Apple.
I am glad to see Microsoft release something that I might actually want for a change, but I am still skeptical. While a pretty interface is nice, it still lives upon a Windows CE base (version 6). Also they haven’t announced any substantial apps for its own app store and may still have a flawed web experience (it runs an updated IE browser).
Only time will tell, but if the underneath is as attractive as the ontop they might onto a winner. Not a game changer as I refuse to call it, but definitely something that is lust worthy for a geek like me.

Windows Mobile 7 Hopes

Posted: January 18th, 2010 | Author: Daniel Georges | Filed under: Technology | Tags: , , , | 1 Comment »

Once upon a time a company called o2 (not the isp) released the Atom, a Windows smartphone like no other. It was small yet had a processor
that was fast enough to compare to a computer I had only replaced a year before. It was a hackers delight, with hundreds of applications and the ability to customise almost everything. I could say it had flaws, but what could I compare it to at that time?

Going forward, many new Windows smartphones would come ahead of it with only minimal changes. The problem was, other companies were now making better smartphones. Blackberry was superior at data compression, Apple superior at user experience and Android superior at price (can’t beat free).

Microsoft needed something drastic to recover their ever shrinking market. they force out yet another incremential update titled windows mobile 6.5. Reviewers were underwhelded by the same old experience. The face had changed but after a single press you were brought back to the same 10 year old techology.

So skipping forward again we now have word of windows mobile 7. Though still in rumor stage the idea is enough get me excited.

A rewrite of the kernel. A new user interface that is similar thought the whole device. A standard hardware experience across the board and no backwards support for old applications.

Wait what? No backwards support, but that was the whole reason you didn’t go apple years go.

I am glad to hear this. On an apple device, all software has a similar experience. The buttons and fonts are similar. The menus and options are similar. This is because apple knows users want a safe familar experience. My guess is this where microsoft is heading (also they will probably have something similar palm for legacy emulation) in that general direction. With a similar SDK and the ability to quickly add to the Marketplace, it would grow quickly.

With market share being lost hourly, I hope that Microsoft can pull a finger out and release a product that I don’t feel ashamed to carry around in my pocket.
